The Midtown Association tapped the talents of local digital visual artist and Sacramento native Brandon Gastinell to wrap two 6-foot utility boxes at Winn Park at 1616 28th St. to help beautify the area.
“Also, special artwork will be added to the electrical boxes at Winn Park by local artist Brandon Gastinell. Brandon will be designing creative designs that will saturate the scene with modern pop culture and bright, bold colors and contrast. A Sacramento native, 2020 marks the first year that Brandon will be participating in the annual Wide Open Walls mural festival.”

“Many of the artists McKinnie has worked with in the past, such as painter Brandon Gastinell, have gone on to successfully pursue their careers in larger cities, a pattern that has emerged throughout Sacramento’s creative community. Local arts advocates say the city needs to ensure steps are taken to provide the same support systems artists are seeking in bigger metropolises like Los Angeles and San Francisco. McKinnie hopes that galleries such as hers will help keep artists local.”

— Blindspotting (limited July 20) hits the scene with two new art pieces devoid of superimposed text besides release month and hashtagged title. Instead they deliver colorful mood murals with actor likenesses, maps, earlier poster motifs (the tree), and found material. Crafted by Brandon Gastinell, the one above and the one at right looks to capture the zeitgeist of raw urban aesthetic on a consumerist level. And they succeed.
